books

a friend told me last saturday that with a certain teacher we are not really going to use the book/s prescribed in the syllabus. that i could have just bought a reader friendly version from the same author.

i was very put out for a while, imagining the shoes/clothes/magazines i could have bought with the 1200 bucks i bought that book for.

it's happened before, during the first year, that i wasn't even able to read the entire books in at least 3 subjects because the teaching pattern did not even require the need for the prescribed books.

i'm of two minds. i've always been a big collector of almost everything, especially books. but then, money is really sacred these days.

then i realized. so what we're not really going to use it? i have forgotten the essence of law school. it's about reading. reading. and more reading. in order to learn. it doesn't matter if the professor isn't citing the books per se. because deep inside. you know that you've read it, you've learned the subject, even if it doesn't come up in the exams.

listening in class is very important too. but when the prof is not reliable. always absent or  not discussing, just conducting recits or plainly non-relatable, the books are the best resource of knowledge, and the cases too. that's why i always buy ALL the photocopies of  cases and read them in full, instead of just reading digests, even if i know i can't possibly read all them in one go. because in the end, it is you, yourself, who will be able to honestly answer the question: ARE YOU READY?

relying on self-studying, reading books and digests in full, even without much class discussion. then perhaps, one day, i can say i am ready.

i have a lot of catching up to do.
